2:00 a.m.: My 7-pound shih-poo, Lucy, stands, stretches, shakes her collar to let me know it’s time to visit the bushes. I roll out of the covers, slip on the flip-flops next to the bed, and scoop Lucy up. On the way to the front door, I hear a song humming between my ears.
Lord have mercy on us.
Christ have mercy on us.
Lord have mercy on us.
It’s a droning Kyrie in an Indian motif used by our visiting priest. It is set in the key of sorrow, of begging.
